Research on antigenotoxic and anti-mutagenic properties of essential oils

Description

The genotoxicity of vegetable oils and condiments is well known in the specialist scientific world (Mukundan et al. 1993, Abraham 1994 & 1996, El HAMS et al. 1999, Ahmad et al. 1997, Smith et al. 1992). Anti-genotoxicity studies on natural substances and the research on anti-mutagenic properties of essential oils are original and innovative.

The singular and fascinating results of our analyses of a dozen essential oils show that there is still great promise being shown by the members of the plant kingdom. Investigation of the anti-genotoxicity of four single and combined EO formulations shows that they significantly reduced mutation patterns induced by urethane (a very powerful mutagenic agent). A percentage inhibition of between 50 and 73% was observed (Idaomar M., Zhiri A., Baudoux, D. et al. 2002. ‘Mutation research, Elsevier Science Journal 513 (2002) 61–68)

Objective

Our objective is to acquire the knowledge needed about the action of essential oils and at the same time to be capable of transforming advances made in research and scientific analyses into innovations in technology.
